CHAPTER 12
I closed the door and leaned against it. There was quite a lot to see of Donovan, from his broad, flat feet up over his round but solid paunch to his wide, sloping shoulders and that round, ugly, beautiful, mashed in, weather-beaten face. As I watched, the face relaxed into an Irish grin.
âHello, shamus,â he said, growling it. âDonât you ever get in off the town?â
âWell, copper,â I said. âDonât you ever knock?â
âI knocked, boy,â he said. âI knocked with brass knuckles. Nobody answered. So I came on in.â
âWalked right through the door,â I said.
âTo tell you the truth, one of the house dicks here is an old friend of mine, a fine chap by the name of Kerrigan. Used to serve with the Chicago policeâa great organization of upstandinâ gentlemen, as you know yourselfââ
âLieutenant, youâre drunk.â
âMe? Donât be insultinâ, boy. I was swillinâ down Irish whisky before you were considered fit for this world.â
It was just talk. Donovan wasnât a drinking man.
âSit down,â he said. âMake yourself at home. Have a drink.â
He waved his arm generously.
âItâs a fine layout you have here,â he said. âIâm glad to see that the International Detective Agency is willinâ to pay you such a handsome sum that you can afford to put up in a fine hotel such as this. Tell meâwhat did you have to do for the money?â
âJust a little dope peddling,â I said. âNot hard work, really, but risky.â
âI trust you acquitted yourself in a manner befittinâ the dignity of our proud profession,â he said.
He was really going good. I was sorry to be so tired.
âI did, I did,â I said. âI used you as a reference. âLieutenant Donovan sent me,â I said, and old Cokie Joe let me right in.â
I had no appetite for it, but I mixed myself a drink so Donovan wouldnât have to drink alone.
âHowâd you know where I was staying?â I asked him.
âYou forget, son,â he said, âit was me that got you this job. I called the people that hired you. I told âem I came out to help. I didnât bother mentioning I was coming out anyway to see my daughter Morrie. They said you were livinâ at the good old Ambassador⦠And a fortunate thing too.â
âYeah?â
âYeah. Because two can live as cheap as one in a place like this.â
âWhat?â
âSure. This is ritzier than at Morrieâs, but where would an old policeman like me get the money for a set-up like this? But I got you, shamus, and now I donât need money.â
âIs that right, now?â I said. âWell, listen to me, flat-foot. For two people, this room costs damn near double. If you think Iâm going to support you in idle luxuryââ
âSo!â he said. âI never thought Iâd live to see the day when the man I raised from a pup would turn me outââ
âListen, popââ
I had eased myself out of my shoes and was leaning back in the chair, holding my drink. I guess I looked a little gray. Because all at once Donovanâs horse play stopped.
